PATENTS
Textile gasket
Applicant: Federal-Mogul Powertrain Inc, USA A heat-resistant textile gasket and method of making it are described. The gasket has a knit, tubular body, constructed, at least in part, from non-metallic, heat-resistant yarns. It also may include metallic yarn. A jersey knit pattern for the yarn is described in order to provide optimum density. The tubular yarn structure is then rolled to form the seal geometry required to fit the seal groove in the mating components. Patent number: WO/2010/019740 Inventors: C. Malloy, Z.H. Zhang, M.-M. Chen, L. Della Putta, G. Mirmand and L. Lundy Publication date: 18 February 2010 either V-section or U-section seals with a variety of extrusion-resistant geometries. Patent number: WO/2010/020364 Inventors: A. Schrüfer, J. Otschik, G. Lederer, P. Philippi, P. Dr?scher, A. Fesl and B. Vogel Publication date: 25 February 2010 Patent number: WO/2010/021323 Inventors: T. Sakuraba and A. Watanabe Publication date: 25 February 2010

Labyrinth shroud seal for a steam turbine
Applicant: A.S. Lisyanskiy, Russia A labyrinth seal is described that has a honeycomb feature fitted within the stationary sections of the labyrinth teeth. The honeycomb block bodies are made of a ductile alloy steel and have a V-shaped cross-section. Specific dimensions make it possible to insert the honeycomb block bodies into the V-shaped groove of a steam-turbine stator, with a minimum gap. These bodies are made up so that they are flat in the longitudinal section. The resilience of the seal enables it to be fitted and retained in the groove. Patent number: WO/2010/021566 Inventors: A.S. Lisyanskiy, A.F. Ivah, M.P. Yushka, S.V. Ushinin and K.V. Gorlicin Publication date: 25 February 2010

Sliding ring
Applicant: Surcoatec International Ag, Germany This patent describes a series of features that can be included within the grooves of positive lift seal faces. Illustrations show features within T-slots but others, such as helical grooves, are also mentioned. The features include a venturi constriction at the entrance to the slot, steps or waves in the base of the slot, double helical steps and what is described as “butterfly lasering”. Grooves also may have a tapered edge. The purpose of the features is to provide a more rapid lift off when starting and reduced friction during operation. Patent number: WO/2010/020394 Inventor: O. N?ll Publication date: 25 February 2010

Exhaust-gas seal
Applicant: Federal-Mogul Sealing Systems GmbH, Germany This invention relates to an exhaust-gas seal for use in an internal combustion engine. Depressions are made in the gasket, in an arc around a proportion of the bolt-hole circumference. These depressions extend for part of the half or the entirety of the half of each threaded hole and are located tangentially opposite a through-hole. A range of gasket geometries are illustrated. Patent number: WO/2010/020304 Inventors: T. Chatziioannidis and H. Rosenau Publication date: 25 February 2010

Sealing device for a universal joint
Applicant: NOK Corp, Japan A sealing device has been developed for effectively preventing the leakage of grease from a universal joint, and preventing foreign matter from entering the universal joint from the outside – both of which may occur because of a change in pressure in the bearing. The static part of the seal has a U-section, reinforcing element, to hold it in place on the spider. Two axial lips seal the bearing grease and exclude contaminants. Patent number: WO/2010/021185 Inventor: N. Kobayashi Publication date: 25 February 2010

Extrusion-resistant secondary seal
Applicant: Burgmann Industries GmbH & Co Kg, Germany The secondary seal that is associated with this mechanical seal is made from a material which has regions of varying degrees of stiffness in the axial direction. The illustrations presented show

A labyrinth seal with honeycomb block bodies fitted in the base of the groove (patent WO/2010/021566).

Joint for a plastic resin pipe
Applicant: Kabushiki Kaisha Tesuku, Japan Disclosed is a joint for a plastic resin pipe. It is designed in such a way that by simply fitting the end of a connecting pipe into the joint, and manually tightening the cap, it is possible to connect pipes so that they cannot be disconnected, and such that the pipe does not rotate while the cap is screwed on. Sealing is achieved on the pipe’s inside diameter by an inner core insert that is screwed into the joint body. Each pipe is retained by two grip rings.

Seal for ceramic glass and metal components
Applicant: General Electric Co, USA Development work has been undertaken on high-temperature rechargeable batteries that use sodium for the negative electrodes. The liquid sodium, negative electrode, is separated from the positive electrode by a sodium-ion conducting solid electrolyte. Problems arise when attempts are made to seal ceramic glass and metal components. In the patented seal, each of the two components includes an alumina-based cermet that contains an amount of metal that is

An example of the extrusion-resistant, secondary seal described in patent WO/2010/020364.
